Postmodern Graphic Design

Before the post modernism movement there was the modernism. One must understand that modernism sought to create a better world while post modernism seems to accept the world as it is. The modernistic view of creating a distinction between high and low culture becomes blurred in postmodernism.

Postmodernism designers had reestablished an interest in ornaments, symbolism and visual wit. They even challenged the idea of the ‘form follows function’ and rejected the teachings of Jan Tschichold and Ruder taking an anarchic known as New Wave.

Wolfang Weingart

Wolfgang Weingart rejected the international style because he thought that the international style became so refined and so common throughout the world that it had lost its appeal. He was the one who created the New Wave style. But he still believed that there were good qualities in Swiss design. He still made use of his favourite typeface the Akzidenz Grotesk and the grid. He created more visually complex and more appealing designs. He created rectilinear stepped blocks.

April Greiman

April Greiman is a Los Angeles designer who embraced the new technology and explored its creative potential. She was one of the students of Wolfgang Weingart. In her first design, she used a Macintosh bitmapped type and computer generated textures were Photostatted to a large size and pasted up through conventional typesetting.

Greiman was the leading figure in the new wave graphic design. She designed for Esprit, Wet, Xerox, Benetton among others. In 2000, April joined the Pentagram.
